From the Heart

From home to home, and heart to heart, from one place to another . . .

The warmth and joy of Christmas brings us closer to each other.

Dear Dad,

I didn’t know what to get you for Christmas. Actually, I don’t know what you ever want for any holiday, even on your birthday. I mean, I could always get you a “#1 Dad” shirt or mug, but what dad doesn’t have enough of that stuff sitting around collecting dust?

I have been concentrating extremely hard on thinking about what you would possibly want. I know you love NASCAR, but I have always gotten you racing stuff for Christmas. I tried to think of what you do for fun, hoping that might spark an idea, but I don’t know what you do for fun. You are always working, Monday through Friday, and then coming home to find just more stuff that needs to be done around the house. I don’t think you ever get a break to have time to do the fun activities that other people enjoy (except for Sunday afternoons, which are totally dedicated to watching cars go round and round a track for hours on end). If you are not outside taking care of the dog or mowing the lawn, you might be found inside painting or even preparing meals.

I don’t know how you accomplish everything every day, working nine-hour days, completing the things needing to be done around the house, paying the bills and still having time for your family, church and going to almost all of the sporting events that we kids are involved in.

I was at the mall, looking for gifts with one of my friends, when it finally hit me. I knew what I wanted to give you for Christmas. All you have ever asked for on any holiday, including your birthday, is for everyone to get along. You don’t want gifts that are purchased at the mall.

I returned home, went straight to my room and prepared the present I have decided on. I spent the whole night working on it.

Dad, I didn’t get you a store-bought present this year. Here it is, the perfect Christmas gift from me to you . . . that truly came from my heart.

Mr. Fix-It,

Trying to repair it all.

Mr. Yard Keeper,

Raking the leaves in Fall.

Mr. Homework Helper,

Helping me prepare for tests.

Mr. Encourager,

Telling me to do my best.

Mr. Punisher,

Grounding me when I do wrong.

Mr. Worker,

Laboring all day long.

Mr. Cook,

Making his famous food.

Mr. Holiday Helper,

To Santa, the Tooth Fairy and the Easter Bunny, too!

However you want to say it,

In good times and in bad,

He is all these things wrapped up in one,

And to me . . . he is my DAD.
